While many fingers point to Arcade Fire’s release of Funeral as the shot heard around the world signaling Canada’s “Montreal sound” was about to explode, the grunt work was definitely done by one of Canada’s most beloved and critically acclaimed indie pop bands, The Dears. These guys toured feverishly (including many stops in Windsor at the dearly missed Avalon Front), supporting such classic Canadian releases as No Cities Left, Gang of Losers and last years Missiles. But sometimes, when a bands principal songwriter is just one of the many, it can lead to the other members longing for a desire to unleash their own creative outlet. And when you’re working side by side with a songwriter like The Dears’ Murray Lightburn, that can only fuel a dormant passion whether you realize it or not. Such was the case with Dears guitarist Patrick Krief. Patrick joined The Dears in the mid-2000’s and debuted on the 2006 release Gang of Losers. Countless tours, recording sessions and dark highways later, and Patrick Krief gets the itch to start working on his own material. The result was 2007’s Take It Or Leave, a solo album under the banner of his last name, Krief. A promo tour ensued to support the offering (including another Avalon Front stop), then it was back to work on the next Dears recording, 2008’s Missiles. But the fire to write and record his own songs grew just too great. Assembling his live band from the previous tour, former Dears drummer George Donoso III, Andre Bendahan on bass, and keyboardist Roberto Piccioni, they hit the studio, this time under a collective banner, Black Diamond Bay. The end result is Calm Awaits, an epic-sounding pop album, grandiose in design, with songwriting that is familiar in warmth but full of a hundred side journeys. At times showing traces of that “Montreal sound”, Calm Awaits will also endear itself to not only bands of that ilk (such as Krief’s former band The Dears, or the High Dials), but of British outfits like Elbow or Doves. While Calm Awaits saw its release on March 31st, Windsor will be lucky to be one of the first stops where it will be available at shows, when Black Diamond Bay hits Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) on Friday April 17th with special guests, Windsor’s own Helsinki Go. (For a full interview with Black Diamond Bay's Patrick Krief, pick up the April edition of WAMM Magazine, at various locations around the city now!)
Tickets for this event are $6 in advance at Phog Lounge, or $8 at the door. These guys are playing much larger venues on this tour than Phog - we really lucked out in getting such an intimate showcase by these guys so early on in the tour.
The Pack A.D. (Vancouver, BC) with special guests Another Saturday Knight Phog Lounge, 157 University Ave. West Doors at 9pm, Tickets are $5 at the door, 19+
The face of blues in Canada is changing. With the explosive debut of Detroit's own The White Stripes a few years ago (that was conceivably bubbling under years earlier with the likes of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) and since fed by the likes of The Black Keys, The Dirtbombs and The Vasco Era, music fans are being treated to a raw and emotionally charged brand of blues garage rock that carries way more of the blood, sweat and whiskey induced tears of the original blues legends of the 1930's and 1940's than much of the 80's blues of Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Healey. Hence a re-emergence in finding some of these older players such as R.L. Burnside.
This has lead to a rise in similar indie sounds coming from our own great country over the past few years. Winnipeg's The Perpetrators have been tearing through Windsor for years now (they played here just last week actually), infecting all who've witnessed with their gritty blues attack. Toronto's The Speaking Tongueshave been making waves of late, touring in support of their critically acclaimed 2008 debut Wild Sound, as well as the sheer awesomeness that is the shredding capabilities of Shiloh Harrison in Cambridge's HotKid. Even locally, we saw a brief resurgence of late, with Lee Gaul and Steven Gibb (both of The Golden Hands Before God...) surfacing in a sideband called Baby Blue Eyes & The Spanish Boots, as well as the raucous blues-based punk rawk of veteran revivalists High Mother.
But no one has done more for Canadian blues and garage rock in the past year and a half than Vancouver's The Pack A.D. Following the oft-imitated new garage blues norm of performing as a duo, guitarist/singer Becky Black and her skins-bashing bandmate Maya Miller have carved their way through an established niche and left an indelible stain of their own blood all across it's dirty sheets. Their 2007 independent debut Tin Type gave an early warning sign to what lay ahead - so much so that one of Canada's longest running and most respected indie labels, Mint Records, scooped them up for their own roster. After adding an "A.D." to the The Pack (there was literally thousands of indie bands called The Pack), they released their Mint debut the following year with the critically acclaimed Funeral MixTape (as well as a full on national re-distribution of Tin Type on Mint).
These ladies sing the blues to whomever is willing to join them for a beer and a song, wherever the rock and roll trade winds take them. They are true testaments to the heart and soul of a travelling musician, playing some nights to the faces of a thousand sweating grins before braving the cold winds of the 401 to playing in front of ten weathered souls, more interested in the Jeopardy on the crackling television set behind the bar. But they've always paid attention by show's end. They give their all no matter the crowd, the venue or the circumstance. They sing their songs with a demand that you feel their stories. An empassioned plea to feel their sting of a broken heart, their joy of a whiskey kiss or their anger at a disrespecting or hard woman. And boy, do you ever.
They've also always stood by the ones that helped them out throughout their journeys - fans and venues alike - and for that very reason they're playing Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) tonight on their tour. This is about the third or fourth time they've hit Phog and by rites they should very well be playing a much larger venue this time around than the meager 60+ that Phog holds. They could easily be at Saint Andrew's or The Magic Stick in Detroit, or at the least, The Blind Dog. But Phog has always treated them well, the crowds have always treated them well, so they'll stick with the stage that brung them.
So if you're hankering for some down and dirty, rock and roll honest to goodness blues, dig out a fiver and head over to Phog tonight for some of the Canadian blues guitar that's even got Rolling Stone in the U.S. taking notice (the latest issue mentioned their killer "Making Gestures" single as one of their faves right now). To warm up the show, Chad Howson and the gang from Another Saturday Knightwill be playing their post-punk pop goodness for a spell.
Here's the video for "Making Gestures" to whet your appetite...
What a week for music in Windsor! After a few quieter weeks (but not lacking in talent by any means), this week explodes with a slew of world class events, from metal to indie pop to cult heroes. Some of these tickets are pricey (so start saving now) but they WILL be worth the price of admission. Many of these acts are on national or world tours and are including Windsor on their stops as a possible new location, so let's show them that we appreciate the best this country (or any country) has to offer when they hit home. The best part is, these acts are being paired up with great local entertainment - in a time when the auto industry is asking us to support local (which really just means support foreign companies who employ locals - because GM and Ford are about as local as McDonald's and Apple), the arts and entertainment are one of the purest forms of supporting local there is. Monday April 13

We, The Undersigned(Fredricton, NB) The Coach & Horses (156 Chatham St. West, below Pogo's) New Brunswick's We, The Undersigned bring their metal assault to the Coach and Horses for a rip-roaring Saturday night in the dirty dungeon. These guys bring an old school sounding approach to hardcore sounds, with it coming across as a blend of Alexisonfire meets Wolf Mother (if that's even possible). Either way, it sounds like a hell of a lot of metal fun.
The Mindframeswsg Metro4(London, ON) Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) The Mindframes have been impressing lately with their great hooks and riffs, that remind some of early era R.E.M. (circa the Murmur era). Sunday April 19
Spookey Ruben(Toronto, ON) wsg The Love Machine(Ottawa, ON) and The Tyres Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) Yes, it's that Spookey Ruben. The "Wendy McDonald" Spookey Ruben. The guy who released Modes of Transportation Vol. 1 back in 1995 and took the indie circuit by storm. The album event brought his quirky songwriting styles to the mainstream as he was critically acclaimed the world over for his freshness and eccentricity. His new wave pop, often compared to such acts as XTC, was raved about from media circuses from national (even the presitgious New Yorker picked it as one of their year's best releases) to zine and backed by his label, TVT Records, his star looked untarnishable. But after a label disagreement, Ruben seemed to disappear (despite the fact he released a few underground albums in subsequent years). Well, now he's back with a new record, Mechanical Royalty, and a new tour. He last played Windsor over 10 years ago, so this is a rare chance to see a Canadian indie rock pioneer in such an intimate venue. Opening up are Windsor's own The Tyres as well as Ottawa's psychedelic popsters The Love Machine. Tickets are $7 at the door for this special treat of a show!
Spookey Ruben: "Wendy McDonald" (Official Video)
Dusty Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) One of the city's premiere entertainers, hand down, he plays an impressive mix of songs, from outlaw country to rock and roll to a little dab of hair metal. Genuinely super dude with a great sense of humour.
Open Mic with Travis Reitsma The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West, beside Pogo's) "The Heartbreak Kid" will woo you with his own songs and share the stage for you to showcase your own at the venue formerly known as the Old Fish Market.
The Perpetrators wsg Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) TONIGHT!
Winnipeg's purveyors of dirty greasy blues rock, The Perpetrators, haul their music makers through Windsor once again tonight and these boys always come lookin' for a fight. Not the physical punch you with a fist kinda fight, but more the "we're gonna smash you in the gullet with some riffs".
Led by guitarist/vocalist Jason Nowicki (the gent on the right in the photo), the "Perps" have gone through several line-up incarnations, from trios to its current state as a duo. But the staple of The Perpetrators' sound has always remained constant, built upon the the undeniable guitar slinger prowess and vocals chops that Nowicki has established for the band.
The Perpetrators have built a steady fan base in Windsor thanks to a relentless tour schedule that has always brought them through Windsor at least twice a year (always at Phog). They've played it smart and continually brought the A-game, building a solid reputation as a band that delivers sweaty, dirty garage rock blues with conviction and sincerity.
At times, their sound is reminscent of a grittier, dirtier Big Sugar, so it's no surprise that they've frequently been joined on stage by Windsor's own Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe, a Big Sugar alumn as well as ringleader for the more than capable Mr. Chill & The Witnesses. Hoppe routinely joins them on stage to lend his world class harmonica and bolster an already unbeatable blues rock sound. Rumour has it, Mr. Chill will be joining them on Phog's little stage tonight, so that only increases the "cool factor" by a Chillion.
Over the past few years, Canada's garage blues scene has exploded, thanks in part to some phenomenal bands such as Vancouver's The Pack A.D.(who are back in Windsor at Phog next week, Tuesday April 14th), Cambridge'sHot Kid, Toronto'sThe Speaking Tonguesand these fine lads from Winnipeg, The Perpetrators. They've rescued the blues sound from the oft-over produced, "safe" sounding boredom that Eric Clapton unfortunately melded into during the 1980's and brought it back down to it's rawest and purest form, mainlining it straight into your ears and veins from a stage near you.
Here's a quick overview of what to look forward to this week in live indie music in Windsor. Just a note that The Chubby Pickle is closed down this week so all shows originally scheduled for this week are in the process of being rescheduled...

These guys have become staples, hitting Windsor at least twice a year on their cross country treks. Kelly "Mr. Chill" Hoppe and Greg Cox The Kildare House (1880 Wyandotte St. East) Mr. Chill and fellow Witness Greg Cox play a stripped down set of great old blues and roots songs, as well as songs from their album, Mr. Chill's Cold Testament. A great night for a pint and a tune!
Official Aries Birthday Jam Club 20 (20 Chatham St. East) For years now, DJ Needle has been Windsor's hip hop champion, promoting the local Windsor hip hop scene here and in Detroit, with his multi-Jammy award winning "Needle 914 Show" on CJAM 91.5 FM. He's hosted multiple hip-hop nights and special events over the years, tirelessly promoting one of Windsor's most overlooked and underpublicized music scenes. He's throwing a huge birthday bash this Saturday at Club 20, with himself manning the decks along with DJ Infinity Sound from Detroit and Hot 102.7 FM's Waxtax-N Dre. This will be one crazy night.
Sunday April 12
Dusty Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) One of the city's premiere entertainers, hand down, he plays an impressive mix of songs, from outlaw country to rock and roll to a little dab of hair metal. Genuinely super dude with a great sense of humour.
Open Mic with Travis Reitsma The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West, beside Pogo's) "The Heartbreak Kid" will woo you with his own songs and share the stage for you to showcase your own at the venue formerly known as the Old Fish Market.
With much of the local mainstream media virtually ignoring the local arts scene (music, film and visual art) or, at very best, tucking it away in small mentions or short clips, Windsor has long relied on local persons to be their voice, a source of "alternative news".
In the early 1990's, ROOM Magazine erupted to a whirlwind of fanfare and became the local rag of choice for issues that to many of us, truly counted. Not only a staunch supporter of the local arts, ROOM Magazine brought forth many of the political issues that affected the younger markets and ones that, at the time, the mainstream usually shrugged away.
By the early 2000's, ROOM had vanished, replaced by Upfront Magazine, who's biting satirical approach to the local news was for some a blessing in disguise and for others, a notch above bathroom wall scribblings. But no matter the view, Upfront's often controversial journalism (they had several articles end up in legal battles over their exposure), Upfront was anything but satirical when it came to promoting Windsor's arts communities. But, in 2008, Windsor was suddenly left without an "alternative voice", when Upfront shut its doors and moved on to Ottawa, where it's biting attacks on Canadian politics would face a greater crowd.
But in April of 2008, Stephen Hargreaves, a local graphic designer and long-standing member of Windsor's music scene (in such bands as NOT_Digital, Children of Laudanum and Sukubus) emerged on the scene with a brand new magazine that ushered in the next wave of local arts news media. With its in-depth coverage of Windsor's arts, music and film scene's, written by those in the trenches, WAMM (Windsor Arts & Music Monthly) Magazine became the voice Windsor had been waiting for.
A year has passed, and through its ups and downs and finding its legs, WAMM Magazine has endured and is now Windsor's premiere voice for its overlooked and underappreciated arts communities. TONIGHT, WAMM Magazine is throwing it's One Year Anniversary party at not one, but TWO, venues, with a great event planned for you to come out and raise a glass to the voice of Windsor arts, and, more importantly, to the people who comprise our arts communities - for without all the talented musicians, artists, film makers and writers who make up these communities, WAMM would be nothing but pretty toilet paper.
One party is at Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West), where all the entries from the 1st Annual WAMM Video Contest will be screened, with the winner announced following the screening. There were some fantastic entries and tonight everyone will have the chance to view all these videos. Doors are at 8pm and it will be a social party for artists of all types to mingle and catch up, with the Video viewing scheduled to start at 11pm. And they'll be having their usual cheap pints of beer special as well!
The other party is at The Whiskey (300 Ouellette Ave., below A-Channel), coinciding with WAMM/The Windsor Scene's monthly Indie Showcase. The cover is only $3 (which is all going to the bands for their services this night) and there are $3 whiskey drinks as well. The bands feature some up and coming stars of the local scene, starting at 10pm sharp with The Mindframes, a new rock and roll outfit featuring some vets of Windsor's music scene, such as Andrew MacLeod, Paul Loncke (of The Locusts Have No King), Aaron McKinley, Brent Reaume and Mike Dube. There will be a break in the music from 11 to 11:45 as the Video Viewing goes on at Phog, followed by more music at The Whiskey. Death or Comberis a band that has been on a sky rocket rise in the Windsor music community, bringing an edgy-yet-melodic style of songwriting reminscent of bands like Shudder To Think or Built To Spill. This young band has been picking up bandwagons of fans of late and it's only a matter of time before there shows are standing room only. Closing out the party at The Whiskey is the "got-to-see-to-be-believed" stage show by The Peace Leeches. Although from Blenheim, this electro-pop duo has been playing Windsor more than anywhere, quickly cementing a hardcore following, based on their energetic and unbelievable live shows and catchy songs. Doors are at 9pm for this showcase.
Unfortunately, both shows are 19+ shows.
A time table line-up for tonight's festivities:
10:00 - 10:45 ... The Mindframes, live @ The Whiskey
11:00 - 11:45 ... Video Screening of Video Contest Entries, live @ Phog Lounge
11:45 - 12:30 ... Death or Comber, live @ The Whiskey
12:45 - ??? ... The Peace Leeches, live @ The Whiskey
A somewhat quieter week for live music in Windsor (after last week's monumental amount of great shows, it's nice to have a breather), but some great shows none the less! Here's a quick look at what's to come...

Tuesday March 31
ALL-AGES: Rockin' Off The Grid featuring The Tree Streets, Inoke Errati, Trevor Cox and Justin Alexander The Basement Pub, University of Windsor (in basement of CAW Student Centre) This free All-Ages event is a one of a kind event here in Windsor and perhaps something other festivals or showcases should look at as a model. From the press release: "The bands will play with 1,000 amps of power, which will be delivered by pedaling cyclists on stationary bikes and a green energy trailer donated by http://windsorpowerhouse.com . The trailer is equipped with wind-turbines and solar panels. This will be the first Canadian concert that is completely off the grid; a demonstration of alternative energy and its many applications." Chalk up another first for the Windsor music scene! Doors are at 8pm and this is an all-ages event.
Ron Leary & "Mr. Chill" Kelly Hoppe Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) Ron Leary and Mr. Chill play a smattering of songs, with some choice covers mixed in with songs from Leary's brilliant debut CD, theroadinbetween, and Mr. Chill's fantastic Cold Testament.
The Last Trio The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West) Alan Penner leads a rotating cast of some of the city's finest players through jazz interpretations and beyond.
Clare Renaud's Session The Kildare House (1880 Wyandotte St. East) A real traditional Celtic feel to this impromptu jam session that has all the flair of a Cape Breton house party. You never know who's going to stop by with what instrument and play what song. And the beer ain't half band neither.
Open Mic with Stefanie Sarafianos The Mill Tavern (3199 Sandwich St.) One half of the sisterly duo Twisted Sisters, Stephanie leads a cast of musicians of all types of experience each week on the West end.
Open Mic with Andrew MacLeod The Dominion House (3140 Sandwich St.) Andrew MacLeod leads another Open Mic on the West end, showcasing many of the city's finest songwriters and drinkers.

A variety of music, from East Coast to contemporary, with a supporting cast featuring Max Marshall on bass and Sally Zori on drums.
Thursday April 2
The Windsor Scene on CJAM 91.5 FM Randi Irving continues to host the on-air version and multi-JAMMY Award winning companion to "The Windsor Scene", each and every Thursday evening from 6pm to 7pm, on CJAM 91.5 FM, Windsor's Campus and Community Radio Station. Hear tracks from some of Windsor's current musical stars as well as nuggets from the vault, not to mention live interviews and peformances!
The Peace Leeches, Death or Comberand The Mindframes The Whiskey (300 Ouellette Ave., below A-Channel) A great local indie showcase of three great up and coming bands from the local scene. The Peace Leeches (who are actually from Blenheim) have been building quite a local following with a series of inspired electro-pop live spectaculars the past year, while Death or Comber has been building quite a following after only a short time together. The Mindframes are another local supergroup, featuring local singer/songwriter Andrew MacLeod as well as Paul Loncke (The Locusts Have No King, ex-The Scarecrows), Aaron McKinley, Brent Reaume and Mike Dube. This is also a co-party to celebrate the one year anniversary of WAMM Magazine.
WAMM Magazine One Year Anniversary Party Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) WAMM Magazine has been covering Windsor's local arts, music and film community for one whole year now and the staff is throwing a party at Phog Lounge to thank everyone for making the magazine such a success. There will be musical guests (TBA) plus screenings of all the entries for the WAMM Video Contest, plus the winner announced!
Huladog The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West) Always a great night of live jazz and funk jams by a group of Windsor's premiere players. Huladog have been at it for years now and they play the perfect blend of great jazz and booty shakin' funk.
"Mr. Chill" Kelly Hoppe, Tom Hogarth and Chris Borshuk Mezzo Ristorante & Lounge (804 Erie St. East) Mr. Chill teams up with the incomparable voice of Tom Hogarth as well as Chris Borshuk for this intimate showcase. A great night for dinner and some music.
Friday April 3
Mr. Chill & The Witnesses Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) Always a good time when "Mr. Chill" Kelly Hoppe rounds up his posse and brings the full band to the stage. A tireless scene veteran, Hoppe, along with his Witnesses (Greg Cox, Josh Zalev and Bradford Helner) are never a bad idea. If you've never seen this foot-stompin' blues & roots combo, now would be a great time (and venue) to experience them for the first time. Ron Leary The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West, beside Pogo's) I don't know how Ron does it, but this man plays and plays and never slows down. He has a weekly gig in Toronto on Thursdays (at The Local, 396 Roncesvalles Ave., for any Toronto readers) but he's racing back on Friday for an intimate solo performance at the FM Lounge (formerly the Old Fish Market). Still playing in support of his stunning debut Theroadinbetween, rumours have it that he's in the early writing stages for songs for his next album. If you haven't seen Ron in a while, now's a great chance to possibly preview some songs from his next CD. The Junction(Brampton, ON) wsg The Tragedy of Mariamand My Son My Son The Chubby Pickle (762 Ouellette Ave.) Touring in support of their new album, Another Link In The Chain, The Junction has been kind to Windsor the past few years, always stopping by with their great indie rock (perhaps because of their kinship with The Reason, featuring several ex-Windsorites). They're joined by Windsor pop-punksters The Tragedy of Mariam and indie rockers My Son My Son. The New Kings(Toronto, ON) wsg High Mother Phog Lounge(157 University Ave. West) Remember when punk rock was political? Well it doesn't get more political than Toronto's The New Kings. Lead by activist/musician Michael Louis Johnson, these guys are like a mix between The Clash and Rancid (whom they've opened for). A horn section always gets a crowd going, and mixed with politically charge punk rock, makes for a wonderful combination. Johnson, who previously worked with Big Rude Jake, also happens to be the brother of ex-Big Sugar/Grady guitarist/singer Gordie Johnson. Opening the show will be the high octane rock and roll of Windsor's own High Mother.
Blind Leads Nakid(Macomb, MI), Demon Street(Sterling Heights, MI) and Sinnocence The Coach & Horses (156 Chatham St. West, below Pogo's) Michigan's Blind Leads Nakid are no stranger to Windsor or the Coach. These metal progsters have been playing over here for years (in fact, it was only recently I discovered they were from the U.S.). There sound is reminiscent of early Soundgarden (pre-Badmotorfinger) with traces of early Monster Magnet. They're bringing another Michigan act over with them, alt. rockers Demon Street. Local metallers Sinnocence open up the show.
(GrounD) Empire Lounge (128 University Ave. West, above California Sushi) DJ's Mach-X and J_Wild continue their weekly electronic collective and live collaboration night at the Empire, spinning the best in "epicness of EDM with techno, dubstep, house, scenster nu-rave, breakz and everything else you've come to expect from this dynamic team." This week they have true live collaboration, with DJ Tone Deft (Nich Finlayson) spinning to a live drummer, Tom Gaspar. Saturday April 4
Aquila, Odium(Walkerton, ON), Punish Them(London, ON) and Ball Harness The Coach & Horses (156 Chatham St. West, below Pogo's) Aquila is fast becoming the new face of Windsor heavy metal, with a rabid following and great word-of-mouth buzz. This will be a special show (as it's vocalist Mark Arruda's birthday) so expect them to turn it all up just a little for this one. Joining them on the bill will be a smattering of offerings from the Ontario metal gods, with Walkerton's Odium and London's Punish Them. Couldn't find much info on Ball Harness... Mr. Chill & The Witnesses Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) Mr. Chill and his Witnesses return for a second round of honky tonkin' roots and blues with night two of their weekend double header at the 'Vark.
Slow Down, Molasses(Saskatoon, SK) wsg Valery Gore(Toronto, ON) and Wax Mannequin(Hamilton, ON) Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) Exclaim! Magazine has called Saskatoon's Slow Down, Molasses "the Broken Social Scene of the prairies" and for good reason. This multi-member collective channel indie lo-fi pop with Canadiana roots with surprising effectiveness. Toronto's Valery Gore adds her quirky piano pop to the line-up, as well as the folk-rock stylings of Hamilton's Wax Mannequin, who has always tore the house down when he visits Windsor.
Harvesting The FAMpresents Through Women's Eyes & Voices with Monique Belangerand Corrina Keeling Milk Coffee Bar (68 University Ave. West) The Harvesting The FAM Festival continues to promote local arts and music with a special month long presentation celebrating women's artistic input to the local arts community. This is a combination of a month long photographer exhibit (featuring works by such local photographers as Roxi D-Lite, Alicia Fox, Bree Gaudette, Cristina Naccarato and more) combined with select live music showcases, with this first one featuring singer/songwriters Monique Belanger and Corrina Keeling.
Jamologyand Anonymous Bosch The Chubby Pickle (762 Ouellette Ave.) I must admit, these are two bands I'm not very familiar with (or of). Not that that means they aren't worth checking out! Jamology sounds like a heavy alternative jam bands (of sorts), while Anonymous Bosch (I love that name...) seem to be a prog metal band in the vein of bands like Dream Theater.
CD Release Party: Solid Statewsg PurpleOrange, Inforlife(Calgary, AB) and Twisted Alliance (Tilbury, ON) The Blind Dog(671 Ouellette Ave., formerly The Roxy) Solid State's throwing a big bash at The Blind Dog to celebrate the release of their new disc, Broken Homes. Cover is $10 but the first 150 people in the door get a free copy of the new release. These veterans play old school metal and play it tight. They've enlisted a few openers, including Belle River's PurpleOrange, former Windsorites Inforlife (now residing in Calgary) and Tilbury's Twisted Alliance.
Sunday April 5
The Whitsundays(Edmonton, AB) and Brasstronaut(Vancouver, BC) wsg The Original Lady Eyes Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) Pick of the Week: The Whitsundays are a supergroup from Edmonton who have been making waves the past year with their stunning self-titled debut, which sounds like it could have been written in 1966. A real 60's throwback sound, reminiscent of bands like The Zombies, these guys are made up of members of such noted Canadian indie bands as Shout Out Out Out Outand Faunts and last year Rolling Stone magazine commented that they were "the next big Canadian indie supergroup", warning The New Pornographers to "watch out". Brasstronaut's experimental indie sounds have also been making waves, especially on CBC Radio 3, where their creative use of a brass section has created some truly remarkable music. Opening up the show will be Windsor's own Original Lady Eyes.
Dusty Aardvark's Blues Cafe (89 University Ave. West) One of the city's premiere entertainers, hand down, he plays an impressive mix of songs, from outlaw country to rock and roll to a little dab of hair metal. Genuinely super dude with a great sense of humour.
Open Mic with Dan Marshall The FM Lounge (156 Chatham St. West) Meters To Miles' frontman Dan Marshall leads an impromptu Open Mic at the Old Fish Market each and every Sunday.
Windsor usually has good weeks of music to offer up to music fans, from the casual to the die hard, but this week has been/will be phenomenal. And the night with the richest pool of talent is easily tonight - so much great stuff going on, that I hope you can attend at least one of these tonight. There are three really big events going on, all for a great reason, and although all deserve your support, at least choose one of them - it'll be fantastic!
First up, The Golden Eagles will be the special guests of Randi Irving's on the radio version of The Windsor Scene on CJAM 91.5 FM tonight at 6pm. These guys are having their CD release party on Saturday, but tune in tonight where you'll hear a little interview and some preview music from their new CD (which is great, by the way). There's also still a couple days left in the Golden Eagles Contest I'm doing right now, so enter your comments for a chance to win two (2) tickets to their CD Release party plus other great prizes.
Tonight marks the first night of the third annual Smash The Glass Festival. Wow, three years. I remember when this started, it was a low-key couple of nights featuring a lot of familiar local ladies performing a diverse array of music. Well, now in it's third installment, it's blown up and now features national and international acts joining the fray. A celebration of women in music, both locally and on a grander stage, Sonia and her crew have done an amazing job in not only keeping the festival alive each year, but expanding upon it and watching it flourish. Tonight's kick off event is at Phog Lounge (157 University Ave. West) and features an eclectic smattering of bands, headlined by the electro-pop of Toronto's Lioness. The rest of the bill includes local electro-diva Perilelle, Toronto's post-punk A Young Wife, and locals The Floral Prints and Erica Di Maio.
Speaking of local women in music, the beloved Tara Watts is having her heavily anticipated CD Release Party for About Love tonight at The Room (255 Ouellette Ave., above Chanoso's). You can read my review of her CD to get an inkling of what to expect musically (although the contest is now over!), but it'll be a grand affair, with locals The Locusts Have No King and 87 Things For The Future opening the show. Tara's been all over the media this week, appearing in The Windsor Star and various radio shows to promote this, so this looks to be a sell out. That means make sure you get there early to ensure your spot for this event. Doors open at 9pm.
The last big show for the evening is a Battle of the Bands-style event at The Chubby Pickle (762 Ouellette Ave.) in conjunction with the Cutting Edge Music Festival. A boat load of Windsor bands will be vying for the local winner slot to play this festival on Friday April 24th at Sound Academy in Toronto as part of the festival. It will also be broadcast live as part of The Edge 102.1's Friday Night Live. A great opportunity for a local band to get some great exposure, so if one of your favourites is on the bill, make sure you make it out to cheer them on! Your voice counts in this! Bands include Explode When They Bloom, Hello Bella, Assassinate The Following, Radio Adelaide, Sinnocence, The Oath of Ares, The Unthinking Majority and Falling With Glory.
